Guerrilla Filmmaking: How Delayed Was Made with an Ultra-Low Budget

With filmmaking equipment becoming more accessible, storytelling through film is no longer as challenging as it once was. The film is an effort to bring together local Seattle Chinese filmmakers and enthusiasts , working with an ultra-low budget while maintaining good production quality.

In 2024, director Keith Qi Chen teamed up with actor/director Henry Dwan, the male lead, through Hawberry Productions-a company founded in 2019 specializing in stage plays, drama workshops, and microfilm production. The team previously won the 48 Without Borders Award at the Seattle 48 Hour Film Project.

Given the constraints of the ultra-low budget production, Keith adapted a prose piece he had written years ago into a screenplay. The film was shot over six days across four months, primarily on weekends when the cast and crew had free time. Often, it was just Keith and Henry on the streets, with Keith holding a Sony FX3 camera, capturing shots guerrilla-style-blending in like tourists.
